The £750,000 Maritime Court scheme in Wallsend offers a safe and secure environment to single young people aged 16-24 who are homeless, or at risk of being homeless, with the aim of providing them with appropriate support to move on and establish independent living. The length of stay varies between six months and two years.
The nine self-contained flats have CCTV cameras, door entry system and intruder lighting. A courtyard provides a safe haven to the young people with decorative lighting, plants and seats. Each resident is responsible for their own flat, with access via the door entry system. Each unit is equipped with white goods, including washing machines, cookers and fridge freezers, and fully furnished with carpets, beds, dining and sitting room furniture.
The Isos Supported Housing team is always on hand to offer housing management guidance. All prospective residents go through the housing application process in addition to the social services referral process in order to ensure that they are ready for this level of independent living.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of high-profile figures including John Harrison, then-Mayor of North Tyneside.
Isos board member Roy Ashton said: "A lot of people worked hard to deliver this terrific scheme and particular thanks are due to North Tyneside Council for their patience and determination. Isos values its long-standing and effective partnership with the Council in responding to social housing needs in the area."
The scheme was supported by a number of partners including Dorin Construction Limited, Simon Nesti and Paul Blane of RNJ Construction Consultants, David Lowdon of Dickinson Dees, Richardson Dees Primary School, North Tyneside Council, Places for People and councillors Norma Redfearn and Margaret Finlay.
Working in partnership with North Tyneside Council, Isos is currently developing a new domestic violence unit in the borough. The £1.7million scheme comprises of seven three-bedroom houses, one three-bedroom flat, two two-bedroom flats and four one-bedroom flats. There will also be a crèche, communal lounge and office space.
